Advanced Indirect Thermal Drying Solution
The Hollow Shaft Paddle Dryer is an efficient indirect thermal drying system designed for removing moisture from industrial and municipal sludge and other challenging materials. It uses heated hollow shafts and specially designed paddles to provide controlled heat transfer while continuously mixing and moving the material through the drying chamber.
ENVIROSUN Energy & Technologies, a German-technology, Indian-engineered environmental company headquartered in Mohali, provides application-specific thermal drying solutions for demanding sludge, water, and energy management requirements.
The enclosed design enables controlled drying with efficient heat transfer, reduced heat loss, and controlled vapor handling, making it suitable for applications where reliable moisture reduction and a compact installation are important.
How It Works
Dewatered sludge is fed into the dryer chamber, where rotating hollow shafts fitted with specially designed paddles continuously mix and move the material.
A suitable heat-transfer medium circulates through the hollow shafts and heated paddle surfaces. Heat is transferred indirectly to the sludge, causing the moisture within the material to evaporate.
The generated vapor is continuously removed through a controlled vapor outlet, while the dried material is discharged from the opposite end of the dryer.
Dewatered Sludge → Feeding → Mixing & Heating → Moisture Evaporation → Vapor Extraction → Dried Sludge Discharge
Efficient Indirect Thermal Drying
The sludge dryer combines indirect heat transfer, continuous mixing and controlled material conveying to achieve consistent moisture reduction and efficient thermal drying.
Indirect Heat Transfer
The heating medium circulates through the hollow shafts and paddle surfaces. Heat is transferred to the sludge through the heated metal surfaces, eliminating the need for direct contact between the heating medium and the product.
Continuous Mixing
The rotating paddles continuously agitate the sludge, improving contact with the heated surfaces and promoting more uniform drying throughout the material.
Material Conveying
The paddle arrangement simultaneously mixes and advances the material through the drying chamber, allowing continuous processing and controlled residence time.
Controlled Temperature
The temperature and flow of the heating medium can be regulated according to sludge characteristics and the required final moisture content.
Vapor Management
Moisture evaporated during the drying process is extracted through a controlled vapor system. Depending on the application, the vapor can be directed toward suitable condensation, scrubbing, or further treatment systems.
Dried Sludge Discharge
Once the desired moisture reduction is achieved, the dried material is discharged for downstream handling, storage, transportation, disposal, further processing, or potential resource recovery, subject to its characteristics and applicable regulations.
Key Features
- Hollow shaft indirect heating technology
- Heated paddle surfaces for efficient heat transfer
- Continuous mixing and material movement
- Controlled drying temperature
- Enclosed drying chamber
- Controlled vapor extraction
- Compact installation footprint
- Application-specific configuration
- Integration with sludge dewatering systems
- Suitable for industrial and municipal sludge
Indirect heat transfer through the heated shafts and paddles provides an efficient method of transferring thermal energy to the sludge while minimizing unnecessary heat losses.
Sludge Dewatering + Paddle Drying
For improved overall efficiency, the Hollow Shaft Paddle Dryer can be integrated with a mechanical sludge dewatering system.
Mechanical dewatering first removes a substantial portion of free water. The paddle dryer then uses controlled thermal energy to remove additional moisture and achieve the desired final dryness.
